Over the last two years, the world has witnessed the horrors of what came to be called a ‘social distanced’ world where people could no longer find communities of support. The student community at Jamia however had experienced this loneliness much before the Pandemic hit the world. As the year 2019 drew to a close, a relentless propaganda transformed thisuniversity- built in the throes of the nationalist movement, a microcosm of the Indian nation itself- into a dangerous hub for ‘anti-national’ activities. This propaganda attempted to silence and muffle voices from the university and it did so quite successfully. The city and the country it appeared had abandoned Jamia. Within the University, a lot changed too. The mindless banter that resonates in university campuses was transformed into distressed conversations about a bleak future. Soon, something remarkable happened. I saw the students of Jamia transform into a powerful force of collective resistance. They displayed exemplary courage by speaking truth to power, by countering hate with love and by challenging the propaganda, half-truths and misinformation with remarkable dignity and wisdom. Their voice of resistance was loud, and resonated across the world. That’s when I knew that their future, that of the University and the country was in safe hands.
