The Gila Wilderness in southern New Mexico was America's first wilderness area established in 1924 by the vision and efforts of Aldo Leopold. He wrote, "A wilderness should be big enough to absorb a two-week pack trip without crossing your own tracks." This book includes poems and a journal describing experiences and impressions of the author in the Gila's mountains and mesas. The main characters include Aldo Leopold, Geronimo, Ben Lilly, Gila trout, elk, deer, bears, tassel-eared squirrels, coyotes, foxes, Mexican grey wolves, Merriam's turkeys and forest fires.
