"In the Days of the Comet" is a science fiction novel by H.G. Wells, published in 1906. The novel is a social commentary on the discontent of the Edwardian era in England, wrapped in a tale of celestial wonder. It tells the story of Willie Leadford, a young socialist who is disillusioned with the class divisions and the state of society. His personal turmoil is mirrored by the approach of a comet that is expected to pass close to Earth.
As the comet nears, a transformation occurs. The comet's tail envelops the Earth, and its gases miraculously reform humanity's outlook. People awaken to a world where their previous animosities and hostilities have vanished. The air from the comet brings a profound change in human perspective, leading to a utopian society based on reason, justice, and harmony.
Wells uses the comet as a metaphor for the potential of collective human evolution and the possibility of achieving a more just and equitable society. The novel is a blend of romantic narrative and hopeful vision for the future of humanity.
