Felice Fontana was an Italian physicist who discovered the water gas shift reaction in 1780. Water gas is a combustion fuel containing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen gas (H2). It is produced when steam is passed over red-hot coke (carbon): H2O + C → H2+ CO (ΔH = +131kJ/mol The water gas contains approximately 44%% of CO, 45%% H2, 5%% CO2 and 6%% Nitrogen.
