On a hot August night in 1803, in a fetid one-room cabin surrounded by primeval forest, the child-wife of a middle-aged Scottish ex-soldier gave birth to a tiny girl. They named the child Anna, which soon became "Annie." Annie McKay's future did not look auspicious. Living conditions in Upper Canada were primitive; the spectres of epidemic disease, starvation, and untimely death were ever present.
Annie's father died during the War of 1812, Her mother remarried and moved into the home of her new husband. She did not take twelv-year-old Annie. Abandoned by her mother and forced to "keep house" for her half brothers, Annie was abruptly thrust from childhood to adulthood.
In this intimate portraid of an early settler woman, we come to know Annie as child, wife, and mother. We share her joys and sorrows as she confronts the harsh realities of homestead life. By the close of Annie's story, we are left inspired by her feisty spirit and staunch faith.
