On a rain-darkened afternoon in an old family house, twin sisters Heather and Bluebell live under the stern eye of their servant Abigail, their quiet Quaker world shaped by prayer, routine, and emotional restraint. Yet beneath the comfort of the book-lined drawing room lies a growing hunger for something larger: Heather longs for companionship, travel, and a life beyond the narrow country home, while Bluebell delights in books and the strange freedom they have inherited after their grandmother's death. As the sisters question what it means to be "their own mistresses," hints of hidden family ties and a wider world begin to stir. Their sheltered existence is jolted by the arrival of cousin Ida Carter, a lively, worldly chaperon whose elegance unsettles Abigail and fascinates the girls. In the midst of this changing household, Heather forms a quiet friendship with Miss Vaughan, an invalid whose deep, joyful faith offers a powerful alternative to empty religion and social ambition. Through their conversations by the river, Heather confronts the collapse of her own faith and comes to understand Christ's sacrifice as the source of lasting peace. Her return to belief brings joy, renewal, and the promise of a life no longer confined by fear or outward appearances. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
