When Dorothy Roden is eight years old, her mother is fatally shot and killed by her stepfather, an American Army corporal suffering from the after-effects of war. The loss of her mother makes a deep wound to Dorothy''s soul. She is taken into the care of relatives, who do their best to look out for her, but nothing can fill the gap her mother leaves behind.
As Dorothy grows older, she is caught in a whirlwind of toxic relationships that lead her down a dangerous path. However, she is also touched by the grace of God, through the loved ones who care for her, the compassion of acquaintances, the truth of His love for her, and the gift of her own inner strength.
Dorothy is a survivor, slowly learning to cope with her painful past, and learning how to heal from age-old wounds. Her ultimate discovery is a lesson we can all learn: the best gift we can give ourselves is hope.
