Many valuable works on the western coun try, or portions Of it, have been made already, but none that seemed exactly suited to the present state Of things. Besides, what was truth eight or ten years since, is no longer truth. Wide and rapid changes have been made. Extensive tracts Of country have been sprinkled over with a population, formed into counties, and begin to show marks of industry and enterprise, which, ten years since, were the hunting grounds of the savage, or only occasionally visited by the white trapper or hunter.
