This is an unforgettable book that helps children, and their parents understand the harm in removing any wild animal from their natural habitat. The author originally thought about writing this true story for children to share in the fun and happiness of his family's adventures with Joey, their adopted baby chimpanzee. During the writing of the book, the years of happiness were tainted by a sense of guilt regarding the reality of Joey being taken away from his natural place of being. "Going Bananas" uses colorful illustrations and masterful storytelling to share the harm of captivity and advocate for animals so they can be truly happy in the wild.
Although there is no way to go back in time and change Joey's life, the author wrote this book to share this important message with others that wild animals should never be captured or kept in a pen. This is a powerful animal advocacy book that was written for children but shares a fundamental lesson for everyone. Animals must live naturally in the wild and human beings share the collective responsibility to give animals the freedom they deserve.
