It was September 1947 when Jackie found the old brown suitcase on her bed, packed with a few clothes and her beloved toy rabbit. Gran informed her she was going to residential school and they'd be leaving right away. Six-year-old Jackie had got used to living with Gran in her little ground-floor flat. She'd lived there for the last few months, ever since Gran came to fetch her. Dad had left in the middle of the night as a violent storm raged. Mum was too poorly to look after 'feisty' Jackie and her two sisters. Jackie didn't know where her sisters were living. Her baby sister had been there one day and was gone the next.
