Eleven-year-old Mira Morales from Guatemala was meant to die in a locked moving van on the Texas-Mexico border along with her twin brother, Bastien. Instead, a fairy creature transports Mira, Bastien, and two other children to the broken world of Arkenia. But fairy magic isn't perfect. . . . Bastien falls under the power of a dark fairy, while Mira and her new friends Keeya and Simon discover their magical powers and unite against invading ghouls. Can Mira conquer the ghouls and save her brother before he becomes a changeling? Her family thought her weak. Mira's about to prove them wrong. In Ghouls of Greenbottom Ward, three children must overcome loss, sadness, and stereotypes, tap into their own brands of magic, and help the lightfey fight back against the dark. Arkenia isbroken land, and Greenbottom Ward is filled with unique fairy creatures such as flame bugs, snap-dragons, and night galumphs. This novel is a high-low fantasy for middle-grade children. The characters are multi-cultural, and the themes revolve around belief in oneself, courage, and friendship. Readers who like fast-paced novels filled with magic and monsters will love this book. Mira serves as protagonist, but watch for Simon and Keeya to feature in books two and three of the series.
