The names appear among those of the early settlers of the province of New Jersey, some coming to the province from Connecticut and Long Island. As all of them lived in New Jersey, some knowledge of the early history of the State is necessary to better understand their history. Many of them belonged to the Society of Friends, and some came from the mother country because of persecution on account of their religion. The name Delaware was given to the river and bay of that name in honor of Lord De La War, who made a voyage to Virginia in 1610. Delawar bay is mentioned by Capt.
