It won’t take you very long in Frankfurt-am-Main (pronounced mine) to see why Germans refer to their financial capital as “Mainhattan”. Its landscape of towering skyscrapers is unlike any other city in Germany. Frankfurt continues to parallel New York when you add to this the fact that the population nearly doubles during working hours, and that more than a third of Frankfurt’s inhabitants don’t hold German passports. Such a diverse population means that the city has much to offer the traveler in the way of different cuisines and cultural offerings – again, not unlike Manhattan. And yet, despite the fact that this is clearly a booming cosmopolitan city, Frankfurt can boast a quality that New York will never touch: its unique German character. This stems from its 1000+ years of architecture and historical relevance. A quick walk around the Römerberg city center will reveal this, as medieval church spires line up against the skyscrapers in the distance. It becomes instantly clear that this city has a long past, full of stories. From the Holy Roman Emperors who were crowned here, to the banking industry’s CEOs who today make decisions that affect the whole of the European Union, Frankfurt is – and has always been – a seat of power.
