Created in 1947 by the Reading Company, FIRING THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE served as the handbook for the last generation of locomotive firemen. Within its chapters you'll find a breakdown of the fireman's responsibilities, including how to prepare and inspect the fire, how to fire different types of coal, and how to correct bad fire conditions. The text also includes a description of steam locomotive mechanics, with detaileddiscussions of the stoker, the grates, the boiler, water systems, smoke and draft control, and the superheater. It's a fascinating reference for the museum docent, hobbyist, or anyone who ever wondered "How did that work?"
