Fiona Finds a Flugel Fish is a story about Fiona, a kind and thoughtful Irish child. The story is set in the idyllic Irish village of Ardara, the birthplace of the author's great-grandfather. Fiona is faced with choices thrust upon her when she discovers that her friends and neighbors may be in serious danger. As she boldly springs into action, Fiona must choose between obedience, respect, fear, caring, and courage. In the end, Fiona's actions demonstrate her wisdom and a feisty spirit that draws her community together. In an era when tolerance and forgiveness can be difficult to find, we find in Fiona a child not only filled with those virtues but with faith, hope, and love as well. Fiona's story calls upon us to recognize and honor children all over the world who face conflict, civil unrest, and even war. Despite these challenges, countless children display resilience, courage, and a gracefulness that should be an inspiration to us all.
