We are the sum Of those before, They live in us; No less, no more. Inheritance-Mary Gilmore More than a hundred years ago, a man leaves his family in the Australian bush to find work. His boots are found beside a river. No other trace is discovered until now. A child is born deaf but so adept at lip-reading that the family stories she "reads" in the face of her grandmother stay with her for the rest of her life. She is imprinted with the language she finds in books, and with the secrets of the past. The child grows into a writer, a woman who travels the world. But all roads lead back to that mysterious disappearance in the Australian bush, to the strange and profound connections between time, language, distance and nationality. Expected Home addresses the gap in every person's life that can only be filled with story, with memory, with the wish to make sense of all that has come before. "Expected Home delivers something entirely unexpected, a compelling mix of narrative genres - memoir, historical mystery, travelogue, personal essay, fictional re-enactment - all poetically compressed into a search for identity, a search for what the past can tell the present. Judy Rowley has created a genre all her own in this stunning, original debut." - Sheridan Hay, author of The Secret of Lost Things
