Coles Expect the Unexpected: Stories from the North End at Village Green Shopping Centre in Vernon, BC

Expect the Unexpected is a highly charged first collection of spoken word poetry based on the lives of inner city youth. It's deep, raw, uncut, and unflinching in telling their stories. Each poem will take you into the inner life of young people trying to survive in a hostile world. The poet explores the common connection we all share, which is pain. There are stories here of jail time, teenage motherhood, broken hearts and homes. But there is also hope here. Johnson has tapped into the hard times and the hard luck of the lives she?s observed and found the words to describe the pathway from pain to happiness. Here are poems created to break barriers, stigmas, and stereotypes that keep us all stuck in darkness, poems to open hearts and minds. As Johnson asserts, "Trouble will not last, for we will overcome any obstacle thrown our way. Our environment will not make us. We will make our environment."
