Existence and Other African Problems
By Ajora Kandasorey
Coffee Mugasi Nzambe has always wondered about existence — particularly existence in Africa and as an African.
Unfortunately, nobody around him thinks this is a useful hobby.
Not his mother, who believes prayer can solve unemployment faster than job applications.
Not his landlord, who treats rent collection like a military operation.
Not the neighborhood pastor driving a luxury SUV financed entirely by "seed offerings."
And certainly not his relatives, who think the real meaning of life is marriage, children, and pretending everything is fine at family gatherings.
Living in a chaotic African city where everybody is simultaneously struggling, hustling, advising others, launching businesses, attending prayer meetings, and forwarding misinformation on WhatsApp, Coffee spends his days trying to understand a society that often feels hilariously irrational.
Why do politicians only discover poor neighborhoods during elections?
Why are funerals more expensive than hospitals?
Why does every broke person know a "life-changing opportunity"?
Why does everyone say "we thank God" immediately after disaster?
After an accidental viral moment turns him into an unlikely public intellectual, Coffee becomes trapped between activists, politicians, family pressure, spiritual confusion, and the exhausting performance of modern African survival.
Because in Africa, existence is never simple.
But it is rarely boring.
