Bishop Sergio holds immense power in a papal society where the Church rules all. From appointing abbots to collecting tithes, from shaping laws to settling disputes, Sergio is a man of influence and faith. But his greatest authority lies in his divine connection—he alone can speak with Diomari, an angel appointed by God to guard the parish and deliver judgment upon the wicked.
At first, Sergio believes Diomari to be a sacred guide, a holy extension of God's will. But the angel is not the serene figure of scripture. Diomari is prideful, temperamental, and disturbingly human in his desires. When he becomes enamored with Palmina, a young woman already promised to another, his obsession festers into rage.
The parish reels when a noble wedding meant to unite powers ends in blood, its joy shattered by a gruesome murder that bears the angel's hidden hand. Diomari's wrath escalates, his divine authority shielding him from earthly consequences. People vanish and fear spreads like a plague.
Sergio, torn between obedience and conscience, realizes he must act. To accuse an angel is heresy; to do nothing is damnation.
