During World War II, many babies are born in Canada and abroad. One such war baby, Janet, comes into the world at the Salvation Army hospital in 1944 and is given over to the care of the Children's Aid Society until finding a loving, permanent family at the age of four. But all her life, Janet longs to know who she is and where she comes from. Even as an adult, with a husband and child of her own, she harbors this secret yearning and becomes determined to solve the mystery of her own beginnings. Following the death of her adoptive parents, she finally feels free to begin her quest, in hopes of finding out where she fits into the universe. A thoughtful, deeply observant, and moving story chronicling the practical steps and the jarring emotional impact of her search, Daughter of an Unknown Soldier does more than tell one woman's fascinating story of finding her roots-it blazes a trail and lights the pathway for other adoptees on a similar search.
