He had a system for everything. The cat was not in the system.
Francis Butler's life runs on precision.
Towels are numbered. Coffee is timed to the second. Tea towels are ironed. He does not own slippers. Slippers are a slope.
When a black cat with amber eyes appears outside his door one Tuesday evening, Francis calls the building's emergency number, attempts a ham-based bribe, and opens the relevant Facebook group. By 7 p.m., he has accepted defeat and made the acquaintance of Hannibal, a rescue cat with anxiety and a superiority complex.
What follows is the story of a man who kept everything in order to keep everyone out, and what happens when a cat, a woman called Agnes, and one very perceptive therapist refuse to cooperate with his systems.
For readers of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, A Man Called Ove, and The Rosie Project.
