Schoonmaker and the Pittsburgh Lake Erie Railroad: A Study of Personality and Ideals NE of Mr. Emerson's ablest reviewers recently ex pressed a hope that, as his first book has been a declaration of a philosophy and the second a definition of principles, the third might be a description of practice animated by the philosophy and guided by the principles of efficiency. Meantime events were working toward this very te sult. The example is not one with which Mr. Emerson has been professionally connected. It is wholly free from any personal relation. It is a railroad in which ideals of relations to the public, of personality, of organization, of equipment and operation, were determined by the manage ment through their own discernment of the fundamental truths on which all efficiency rests. Mr. Emerson was placed on the inside of the work ings of this road. By the courtesy and co-operation of its officials he was brought into intimate contact with all its problems and conditions. From this point of view he shows how excellent a realization of the principles and the precepts of efficiency may be secured and is secured in the operation of the line in question - the Pittsburgh Lake Erie.
