From the Chinese point of view, a missionary's task is to get men to learn the Doctrine, by his first having learnt the language in which that Doc trine is to be expressed. It behoves him, therefore, to learn that language in such a manner as to gain respect for his message, whether it be delivered in a spoken or written form. For the latter, he may be inclined to trust entirely to his Chinese pundit, but both he and his message will command the greater respect if he be able, with his own pen, to write with some degree of fluency. Towards this end, he may gain practice through the medium of amateur letters to a few of his intimate Chinese friends for his faculties of composition for print in his own language have been gained, in the first instance, through practice in letter-writing to his own folks at home.
