But they are not (a very few excepted) abridgments in the words of the compiler, but condensations in their own language b. How admirably this is done may be seen by any one who will take the trouble of collating a few pages Of some Of the more diffuse writers, e. G. S. Chrysostom or Origen, with the Catena. For instances particularly in which a sentence is made up of clauses gathered from distant pages, see the summary of the Sermon on the Mount, chap. Vii.
