The title Carry On encapsulates the central theme of the book—resilience and endurance in the face of overwhelming hardship. Through these letters, Dawson conveys the spirit of camaraderie, the sense of duty, and the psychological challenges faced by soldiers during the war. The letters also provide insight into the emotional conflict between patriotism, fear, and the overwhelming devastation of the trenches. They reveal the complexities of war, both in terms of the heroic and tragic elements, and the personal cost of serving in such a brutal conflict. What makes Carry On particularly compelling is Dawson's ability to balance the dire realities of war with his thoughts on hope and perseverance. The letters serve as a form of emotional connection with those back home, offering solace and expressions of loyalty, while also showing the emotional strain soldiers endured. The book provides an invaluable historical perspective on the World War I experience, capturing the thoughts and feelings of an individual soldier at a time of great personal and national crisis.
