When the cardinals begin tapping on windows, the town learns to keep the curtains closed.
In a quiet North Carolina mountain community shaped by loss, red birds arrive as omens.
They knock.
They wait.
And when a window is opened, they take something in return. A name. A memory. A piece of grief that refuses to loosen its hold.
After the death of her husband and the death of his wife, one woman and one man become entangled in a system older than superstition and more organized than faith. The cardinals are not symbols. They are ferrymen, couriers, and agents of a strange bureaucracy that moves between life and death, offering relief at a cost no one can fully measure.
Some open their windows willingly. Others refuse and learn to live with the weight. Most are left wondering whether forgetting is mercy or betrayal.
As the town adapts, rituals form. Windows are covered. Latches are reinforced. Stories circulate to soften the fear. But grief does not follow rules, and neither do the birds.
Written in lyrical, precise prose, Cardinal Sins is a literary exploration of mourning, consent, memory, and the quiet negotiations people make to survive loss. It is a book about what we choose to carry, what we let go, and the fragile line between remembrance and release.
