Excerpt from Brief History of the Art of Stenography: With a Proposed New System of Phonetic Short-Hand The necessity for rapid writing, arising from the increased activity of business and professional life, naturally calls attention to short-hand writing as a substitute in many cases for the common method. Although this art has, in recent times, been used principally as a means of reporting speech, its advantages for many other purposes of writing, where rapidity is required, are becoming more and more generally recognized. This increasing interest in the use of stenography for common purposes suggests inquiry as to the merits of the different short-hand systems, and as to the possibility of improvement upon those which have thus far been published.
