The world changed when black teens in Atlanta began unlocking powers no one could explain. They were called Variants-miracles to some, monsters to others. For four years, they've lived in uneasy peace. But when an unarmed Variant dies in police custody, that peace shatters. As protests ignite and the city teeters on the edge, a militant group of Variants known as the Fam rises up, demanding justice by any means necessary. Caught in the middle is Jules, a youth director secretly training young Variants to control their gifts and bridge the gap between fear and understanding. Now, with enemies closing in and alliances breaking apart, Jules and his students must choose: stand down, or rise up and risk everything. Some powers divide us. Others reveal who we really are.
