Coles Blue Sky And A Buick: The Journey of Mary Christiana Hettler at Village Green Shopping Centre in Vernon, BC

It is hard not to fall in love with fashion plate Mary Christiana Hettler who gives up the high society of Chicago to ultimately move to rural Nevada, one of the bleakest sites in the nation to serve as an Episcopal Deaconess. Upon landing in the mining town, known as a murder capital during its heyday, Mary Christiana doesn't give an inch. She transforms a dusty, dingy "icebox" of a house into one that becomes the heart of the Episcopal community with hot pink rooms, exotic flowers and a rolling, grassy yard. In the process, she brings beauty and spirit to a little girl who can never quite forget her. Read 'Blue Sky and a Buick' as a loving portrait, a history of Nevada, a unique insight into the women's movement inside of the church or a subtle story of growing up in a Wild West that still lived in rural Nevada.
