Coles Behind the Steam: The Inside Story of the Gastown Steam Clock at Village Green Shopping Centre in Vernon, BC

Behind the Steam is the only complete account of a Vancouver icon, the Gastown Steam Clock. Author Daryl Stennett lays out the humour,
the pain, and the joy of ordinary people who toiled with extraordinary commitment through design errors, construction mistakes, vandalism, and accidents. The idea for a steam clock nearly turned to water when the clockmakers of the day declared that “clocks and steam don’t mix!” Then, beset by disdain from artistic critics, anxiety over financial shortages, and the immutable laws of mechanics, the unique concept almost didn’t make it out of the workshop. Behind the Steam digs deep to reveal the story of how this clock broke the rules and found fame if not fortune. Illustrated with anecdotes, sidebars, and 177 images, the steam clock saga comes alive on the page, grabbing your attention and not letting go until the last anecdote is read.
