This book is a detailed military history study that explores the little-known pages of the Great Northern War , focusing on the winter campaign of Charles XII's Swedish army (Caroleans) in Ukraine in 1708–1709. Utilizing a vast array of historical sources, this work is the first to provide a detailed account of the Carolinians' quarters and the challenges they faced during their wintering in the Hetmanate, as well as the alliance between the Swedish king and the supporters of Hetman Ivan Mazepa (the Mazepists). It also sheds light on the events leading up to the Swedish defeat at the Battle of Poltava. Furthermore, the publication offers insights into the toponymic legacy left by the Scandinavians in the Chernihiv-Sivershchyna region and details their captivity in these lands.
