"An Old Maid" is a character-driven novel that centers around the life and experiences of its protagonist, Rose-Marie-Victoire Cormon, a woman known as "Vicomtesse du Bousquier" due to her late husband's title. Rose-Marie is a wealthy and aging woman who is still unmarried, earning her the label of "old maid" in the society of the time. The novel explores the challenges and societal pressures faced by Rose-Marie as she navigates the complex world of courtship, love, and marriage. Her financial wealth and social status make her an attractive prospect for various suitors, but she remains single for reasons that are gradually revealed throughout the narrative. As with many of Balzac's works, "An Old Maid" is known for its keen observations of human nature and its satirical portrayal of French society. Balzac delves into the intricacies of relationships, ambition, and the clash between personal desires and societal expectations. The character of the Vicomtesse du Bousquier is one of Balzac's memorable creations, and her journey serves as a vehicle for Balzac to explore the complexities of love, marriage, and the pursuit of happiness, especially for women in 19th-century French society."An Old Maid" remains a significant work within Balzac's "La Comédie Humaine" and contributes to his broader exploration of human behavior, social dynamics, and the moral and psychological dimensions of his characters' lives. It is a reflection of Balzac's ability to create vivid and multi-dimensional characters and provide insightful commentary on the society of his time.
