An Offering to the Eumenides is a collection of 215 sonnets focusing on love, trauma, and morality.
Sonnet 121
The heroes of the past conversed with gods,
And gods would heed the prayers that they said.
Though some may feel for this a certain awe,
I feel no envy for them on this head.
For lately, I am far too well acquainted
With certain deities that will not die.
When seeing them, the brave Orestes fainted,
And noble Oedipus red teardrops cried.
Eumenides, of origin eternal,
Who let not sin escape from memory,
Have risen from the mists of the inferno:
Some god has sent them here to punish me.
And yet it seems that others’ eyes deceive them,
For none of those around me can perceive them.
