Charlestown remembers in precise detail. Step back to 1813, as Josiah Bartlett stands before the citizens gathered for the opening of Washington Hall, Charlestown, to recount the town's story from its earliest days to the aftermath of revolution. An Historical Sketch Of Charlestown, In The County Of Middlesex, And Commonwealth Of Massachusetts is an early American historical sketch that places the history of Charlestown, Massachusetts within the wider pattern of New England town history, from settlement and faith to commerce, conflict, and civic pride. Through measured, observant prose, Bartlett evokes the landscape and people whose lives shaped this cornerstone of the Boston area, offering a concise yet resonant Massachusetts town history book. As a Middlesex County historical narrative delivered less than forty years after the Revolution, the Sketch is invaluable for understanding Charlestown revolutionary war history and, above all, Bunker Hill battle history as remembered by near-contemporaries. It speaks directly to the concerns of 19th century Massachusetts history: memory, loss, rebuilding, and the forging of local identity in a young republic. New England history buffs will find rich texture and period detail, while family historians will value its names, places, and incidents as a grounded genealogy research resource and an essential part of any serious Boston area history collection. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
