Bledsoe’s examination methodically addresses Edwards’ key points, focusing on whether human actions can be genuinely free if they are foreordained by God. He argues that Edwards’ deterministic framework undermines individual moral accountability, as it negates the concept of personal choice. Bledsoe posits that true moral agency requires an indeterminate freedom, where human beings can genuinely choose among alternatives, a freedom he believes Edwards’ theology fails to allow.Throughout the book, Bledsoe employs a philosophical and logical approach to dissect Edwards’ reasoning, contributing to the broader 19th-century discourse on free will, determinism, and morality. An Examination of President Edwards' Inquiry into the Freedom of the Will remains a significant critique within theological and philosophical studies, engaging readers with its deep dive into the complexities of free will and predestination.
