Amitabha, also known as Amida Buddha, is revered as the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life. In Pure Land Buddhism, followers believe that by invoking the name of Amitabha with sincere devotion, they can be reborn in his Pure Land—a realm of ultimate enlightenment—where they can continue their spiritual journey and attain Buddhahood.Paul Carus, through "Amitabha: A Story of Buddhist Theology," likely aimed to introduce readers to the concept of Amitabha and Pure Land Buddhism, while also exploring the theological and philosophical aspects of this tradition. Carus was known for his interest in East Asian religions and his efforts to promote the understanding of Eastern philosophy and spirituality in the West. The book might present a narrative that not only explains the theological aspects of Amitabha's Pure Land but also delves into the moral and ethical teachings associated with this belief system. Carus likely intended to make Buddhist concepts accessible to Western readers and to contribute to interfaith dialogue and comparative religious studies.
