Hagar Hershberger has a lot of reason to dislike Gideon Lapp, no matter how much she prayes to God to help her forgive him. Now, Hagar's widowed mother has deeded her father's blacksmith forge to Gideon because Hagar's dead father taught Gideon the skill.
