AMERICAN BY CHOICE is like no memoir you've read. The author experienced three totalitarian political systems-all before the age of 18. Born in Germany, he experienced National Socialist ideological indoctrination, becoming a Hitler Youth-in-training at the very end of World War II. He and his family survived the infernal nightmare that was the Battle of Berlin and eventually escaped Soviet occupied East Germany with the help of US Army Counter Intelligence. As a teenager, Paul had his dream of coming to America fulfilled, only to have it taken away when accusations of his father's involvement in medical war crimes were leveled. Intense political pressure generated by a media feeding frenzy resulted in Paul's family moving to South America in 1952 with the full knowledge of the State Department and US Air Force. Although Paul experienced living under the Perón regime in Argentina he never gave up hope of one day returning to America.
