Ambrose Bierce was a man of sharp wit and even sharper words. A celebrated journalist, satirist, and author of eerie, thought-provoking stories, he left an undeniable mark on American literature. But in 1913, he did something that would cement his name in history for a different reason.
At the age of seventy-one, Bierce set off for Mexico, a country in the midst of revolution. He told friends he wanted to witness the chaos firsthand, perhaps to write about it, perhaps for reasons only he understood. His final letters hinted at a journey into danger, but after crossing the border, he was never heard from again. Did he die in battle, fall victim to an unknown fate, or simply decide to vanish on his own terms?
His disappearance remains one of the greatest literary mysteries of all time. This book delves into Bierce's life, his haunting stories, and the enigma of his final days—a mystery that, over a century later, still refuses to be solved.
