The 44 women interviewed in this book explain how their gynecological surgeries have had lasting effects on them--even though their conditions were benign. Acknowledging that the removal of the ovaries or the uterus made them feel less female/feminine, these women also stated that social factors in addition to the support--or rejection--of their partner also contributed to their emotional responses. The women ultimately sought to reclaim their gender identities and understand it in a biological, social, and cultural context. This book provides a wealth of insight into the choices women make regarding gynecological surgery and maintaining their sense of themselves as women.
