Robby Adams must live out of a battered van after his mother evicts him on his eighteenth birthday. With a fourteen-year-old brother who has Down's syndrome, a scruffy van-mate named Dack, and a street ally known as "Scary Mary," Robby confronts poverty, family obligations, and the search for identity. As he moves from survival to self-acceptance, the novel blends gritty realism with a thread of hope.
