When her parents are posted abroad and her aunt declines to keep her again, a delicate only child finds herself enrolled at a famous boarding school in the Swiss Alps. She arrives full of romantic notions, having devoured every school story she could find, but the cheerful chaos of dormitory life soon tests her bookish certainties.
Settling into her form proves harder than she imagined. A bitter quarrel flares with another girl, a thoughtless word betrays a hard-won secret, and reckless decisions on Lake Thun threaten more than detention. Older girls offer guidance, mistresses lose patience, and the headmistress finally calls the worst offenders to account.
Through painting expeditions in the mountains, half-term scrambles through famous caves, and the bustle of preparing the school sale, an over-protected child must learn what real friendship costs — and whether she has the courage to become the kind of girl her new school can be proud of.
