Althea Gibson is specifically written to meet the needs of adolescents and adults who are reluctant readers. This high-interest, low-vocabulary biography is ideal for English as a Second Language or adult basic education students. At the age of 23, Althea Gibson (1927-2003) broke the colour barrier when she played in the U.S Open. She was the first black person to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. Her journey from the streets of Harlem to the courts of Wimbledon reveals her determination. Althea was a trailblazer, who paved the way for other tennis players.
