Coles Along the Shore and Through the Trees: Two Lives on the Line from Ahousaht to Estevan Point at Village Green Shopping Centre in Vernon, BC

A telegraph line runs the length of Vancouver Island’s remote and rugged west coast, from an iconic lighthouse on Estevan Point to the small Nuu-chah-nulth community of Ahousaht on Flores Island. Along the Shore and Through the Trees is the story of two lives – two memoirs – that are tied together by that line.
The first memoir is author Des Davidge’s and recounts his time spent as a radio operator at Estevan Point Marine Radio Station from 1957 to 1959. It’s a story of isolation but also of reverence for the natural surroundings and for the cast of characters with whom Des worked and befriended. The second memoir was told to Des by his wife, Rosina Adeline Ada Rae Arthur, whose father spent over three decades maintaining that same line. It is a combination of Rosina’s childhood memories, excerpts from the log kept on the maintenance of the line dating back to 1932, and Des’s own research. (If the name Ada Rae Arthur sounds familiar - Rosina is the great granddaughter of Ada Annie Rae-Arthur, later known as Cougar Annie.)
Set in an isolated but extraordinary corner of British Columbia, this is a compelling story of history, geography, friendship, and love.
