Allan and the Ice-Gods is one of the most imaginative entries in the Allan Quatermain series. In this story, Quatermain experiences a powerful vision induced by a mysterious substance, allowing him to relive a past life set in a prehistoric, frozen world. In this earlier existence, he becomes Wi, a hunter living among a primitive tribe surrounded by vast glaciers. The tribe believes itself to be alone in the world until Wi rescues a strange and beautiful woman named Laeela from the sea. Her presence challenges their beliefs and traditions, as she is seen by others as a witch. Influenced by Laeela, Wi begins to question the customs and superstitions of his people, leading to tension and conflict within the tribe. As rivalries intensify, the story unfolds through acts of bravery, betrayal, and transformation. The narrative culminates in a catastrophic natural event, symbolizing the fragility of human beliefs and the power of nature. Blending adventure, romance, and myth, the novel explores the origins of faith and civilization.
