Doyle Wells' book 'All Quiet' offers a truly remarkable perspective on the working life of an operational police sergeant stationed in a remote mining town in Notre Dame Bay in the late 1800s. Through the detailed daily diary of his great grandfather, Sergeant Thomas Edward Wells, the author weaves a rich tapestry of events that occurred on the 'police beat' in and around Little Bay. This book is a very valuable addition to the illustrious, and often challenging, history of a very proud old colonial police force - the (Royal) Newfoundland Constabulary. Never before has such a revealing personal account, the diaries of a police sergeant, been opened for public consumption in Newfoundland. A 'must read' for all those interested in history.
Gary F. Browne, author/historian Deputy Chief of Police (retired) Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
