Eugene O'Neill's All God's Chillun Got Wings traces a devastating love story shaped by race, class, and the hunger to rise beyond humiliation. In lower New York, Jim Harris and Ella Downey begin as children whose teasing and tenderness already carry the sting of color prejudice; years later, their bond is tested by ambition, public mockery, and the brutal social codes of the ward. Jim, determined to become a lawyer, is shamed for trying to escape his place, while Ella is drawn into a cycle of disappointment, loneliness, and hard-won bitterness. Their encounters move from jealousy and rejection to confession, sacrifice, and a fragile hope for marriage, even as each struggles with self-doubt and the impossibility of escaping racial hierarchy. The play builds to a heartbreaking mix of love, spiritual yearning, and resigned tenderness. The excerpt also introduces Welded, where Eleanor and Michael Cape reunite in a New York studio apartment after time apart. Their affectionate, playful conversation reveals both artistic devotion and the strain of a marriage marked by loneliness, defensiveness, and repeated conflict, as they try to preserve the intensity of their love. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
