BOOK TWO After the log boom had passed, Martha said to Gretchen, "Boy, what a scruffy looking crew that was. That guy in front was nownright scary. I sure wouldn't want to meet up with him at night. You don't suppose they were those River Pirates that we've heard about." BOOK THREE As they were leaving, Star gave them a warning, "Don't stay too late. There's a very large pack of Timber Wolves that has moved into the river valley this winter. Last week, I found one of my young heifers eaten right to the bones; right behind the barn. They are probably about ready for another feeding."
