Six weeks after Sugarbrook broke free from a spell that controlled every choice, the village is determined to do things differently.
Every magical decision must now be recorded, reviewed, and open to challenge. But when a new Official Copy of the village Ledger begins deciding who belongs, the rules meant to protect Sugarbrook start leaving people out.
Roads refuse to recognize returning families. School doors forget certain children. Homes disappear into pale spaces between the map and the truth. And the more efficient the Ledger becomes, the harder it is to stop.
Wilbur Whisker knows something is wrong - but after all the harm caused by his old habit of ignoring rules, can he risk challenging them now?
With Elara's new authority under pressure, Malachi caught between Sugarbrook and the Academy, and young witnesses Tommy and Mina forced to choose between truth and privacy, the village must discover how to act without turning unfinished lives into final answers.
Warm, witty, and full of unusual magic, The Ledger That Left Things Out is a story about belonging, responsibility, and the courage to admit that fairness sometimes begins with the words: we do not know yet.
