Georgia Alderink learns what adaptation means when she marries a veterinarian and moves from Minneapolis, Minnesota to sagebrush-scented acreage in Montana. She is forced to adapt to worlds that existed only on the periphery of her knowledge - the world of veterinary medicine and the world of cattle ranching. But that is minor compared to the adaptation compelled on her after their young daughter is struck by a car and instantly killed, which comes shortly before their son's devastating diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. How does she cope with these events while serving as her husband's practice manager and veterinary technician and raising two healthy daughters? Georgia answers this question with essays and stories written with both sensitivity and humor.
